‘Age, Experience May No Longer Be Conditions For Employment’- Senate

Senate

As part of measures to tackle unemployment, the Nigeria Senate on Tuesday proposed the removal of employment conditions such as age limits and professional experience usually set by employers.

President Buhari’s administration was also urged to declare a state of emergency on  unemployment.

The Minister of Labour, Employment and Productivity, Senator Chris Ngige was therefore summoned by the senate to tell Nigerians what the present administration is doing to address the problem.

They made the move during plenary after two motions bordering on employment were moved by Senator Duro Faseyi (Ekiti-North) and Senator Matthew Urhoghide (Edo-South).

Fayesi’s motion was entitled, ‘Intolerable upswing of unemployment in Nigeria,’ while Urhoghide’s was entitled, ‘The need to unburden recruitment requirements and modes to remove undeserved hardship for job-seekers in Nigeria.’

“The Senate observes further that the government appears seemingly helpless in concretely grappling with this monumental socio-economic gridlock,” Faseyi said, while moving the motion.

The prayers of Faseyi’s motion, which were all granted by the Senate, include the need to “invite the Minister of Labour and Productivity to provide insight into government’s roadmap towards tackling the shocking unemployment rate and consequently reviewing and reinforcing the blueprint.
