President Muhammadu Buhari’s silence on the report of 26 young Nigerian girls who were reportedly sexually abused and killed while trying to cross the Mediterranean sea into Europe recently has been condemned.
A former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, who expressed her displeasure said that the reaction by Abike Dabiri–Erewa, senior special assistant to the president on foreign affairs and diaspora, is not enough compared to when her principal himself reacts to the report and reaches out to the families of the deceased.

Some things in Governance are pretty simple to do when people are thoughtful enough:
Good Governance would have meant the President’s arranging an interception by the Media as he left NASS yesterday to enable him give a #HoldingComment on #MediterraneanTragedy.— Oby Ezekwesili (@obyezeks) November 8, 2017
That there is even an argument on how the President ought to respond to the death of his 26 Citizens in very embarrassing and tragic circumstances ABROAD, sure says a lot about the state of the SOUL of our society.

Citizens must without any reservation DEMAND the appropriate and speedy response of our President (no matter who it may be) & the FG to all matters RELEVANT to Governance of the Nigerian people. The tragedy of the 26 girls & women is one of such. There is a Cause. ✍

Reading some of the comments by Nigerians on matter like this #Mediterranean, one can see how DEGRADED people have assumed Citizenship to be. They no longer think the Government owes a modicum of Dignity to a Citizen’s Life. Thank God there are fewer who feel that way.

“This tragedy is heart wrenching. We’ll accelerate implementation of the measures we’ve since identified to reverse this dangerous trend. As we learn more on the recent tragedy, my team will brief the public. The remains of any Nigerians among victims will be properly handled”
— Oby Ezekwesili (@obyezeks) November 8, 2017
The President would continue by saying:
“We had in 2016 received a briefing from the Government of Italy on the escalation of Trafficking of Nigerian Girls & Women through the same route of this tragedy. Following that our government began putting some measures in place”.— Oby Ezekwesili (@obyezeks) November 8, 2017
The President would say something like this to reassure his Citizens:
“We are aware of the #MediterraneanTragedy. Upon learning that the 26 Victims are from West Africa, we swiftly reached out to the Italian authorities to ascertain details of their identities.”— Oby Ezekwesili (@obyezeks) November 8, 2017
“The Federal Government was briefed by Italian authorities on this development late last year. Sources said the government regarded the high number of Nigerians seeking asylum abroad as “mind-boggling and embarrassing.” Quote from a January 2017 report by .@GuardianNigeria
