#Zimbabwe: Throwback Video Of What Mugabe Said About Military Coup In 1980

A video has surfaced online of President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe back in 1980, saying no military coup can cut short his reign.

But it appears his famed invincibility has been lost after 37 years of firm rule and political manoeuvrings, as the the military seized power and placed him under house arrest on Wednesday, November 15.

The military, yet to declare its ultimate aim, is now in control of all arms of government in Zimbabwe.

Its top brass has said it will step back once it accomplishes its mission — which remains to be known.

Amidst all the developments in Zimbabwe, not a word has been heard from Mugabe who in 2016 said he will “die in power”.

A few months ago, Mugabe had bullishly declared that “I am not dying and will not step down” as president.

Over the years, he has made such comments to assert his authority and let the people know he was in charge.

In 1980, Mugabe all but said no coup can remove him from power.

“I am a prime minister of my country and I intend to rule that country with firmness. I’m not going to have anybody advocate the overthrowing of a government, and remain in the country,” he had said.

Although the military maintains there has not been a coup in Zimbabwe, the African Union says it has all the makings of one.
