Dr Maya Angelou lived an extraordinary life as writer and civil rights activist and is remembered today on what would have been her 90th birthday.
Google’s latest Doodle pays tribute to one of the foremost African-American creative voices of the 20th century on a poignant date, for 4 April 2018 also marks 50 years since civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.
She was a major figure in the movement in her own right as well as a champion of women’s rights and gender equality.

“It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.”

Such an honor to have had you as a father and to still have you as a teacher. I greatly admire your courage and strength to love, and I learn from you daily. In the words of Maya Angelou, I “can be and be better because you existed.” Thank you. Miss you. #MLK #MLK50Forward pic.twitter.com/n9qD2X199z
