A Timeline Of Major Changes Made By JAMB

The decision of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to reduce the cut off marks for admission into tertiary institutions has become the subject of discourse among Nigerians.

People are wondering why JAMB deemed it fit to peg the cut off marks at 120 which is less than average of the obtainable mark of 400.

The reduction is coming at a time experts say the Education sector need a revamp and are also calling for the head of Education Minister, Alhaji Adamu Adamu for not being effective.

Below is the timeline of changes made by the Federal Government and JAMB to the exam meant to determine if a candidate would gain entry into tertiary institutions;

1.) Introduction Of CBT Centres

The computer-based test (CBT) method of writing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) was introduced by JAMB in 2013.

JAMB conducted the examination in 2013 and 2014 using three modes, namely, dual-based test, paper pencil test and CBT. It went full scale CBT in 2015.

2.) FG Scraps Post-Utme

On Thursday, June 2, 2016, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu ordered that the controversial examinations usually organised by universities in Nigeria for admission seekers after the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations should be scrapped.

The government argued that if there was absolute confidence in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, there should be no need for Universities to conduct internal examinations to determine the fate of candidates seeking admissions.

3.) Introduction Of Mock Examinations

Following the announcement of its plans to begin sale of forms for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, JAMB also announced that there will be a mock examination before the conduct of the 2017 UTME.

4.) Ban On Post-Utme Lifted

The Federal Government on Wednesday, August 16, lifted the ban on the controversial examinations usually organised by universities in Nigeria for admission seekers after UTME.

Education Minister, Adamu Adamu, however, urged university authorities to make the fees for the screening affordable and not to impose huge financial burden on the parents.

5.) Pegs Cut Off Mark

The most controversial one yet, the Examination board announced on Tuesday, August 22, that the minimum cut-off mark for admissions into universities for the 2017/2018 academic year is now 120 while 100 is the minimum cut-off mark for admission into polytechnics.
